About Us

Produce for Parks (PFP) is a collaborative community effort aimed at increasing access to healthy food in the community of Chapel Hill, NC, and to support local farmers. Founded by a Chapel Hill youth, Marin Lissy, it is co-sponsered by the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation, funded by the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties. It is also supported by the Chapel Hill Farmer’s Market, Farmer Foodshare, and several independent farms.

The PFP mini-market is a temporary, trial initiative that is intended to provide another option for healthy eating to recreational park users and nearby residents of Cedar Falls Park. It combines recreational/fitness related activities with access to healthy food choices, local foods, both of which are important for overall health and wellness.

The PFP farmer’s market ran from July 16-August 13th, 2017. What is happening now?

The 2017 trial effort was extremely successful! Unfortunately, a key vendor was unable to participate in 2018, which meant the market was not continued the next year. Produce for Parks hopes to continue its mini-market again this Summer 2019! It is currently in the process of contacting the Parks Department to see if it is a possibility.

Why At A Park? And Why Cedar Falls Park?

A park is a natural gathering place where people reside together to play and enjoy the outdoors. That means that we have a “captive audience” at and around the park to provide healthy food. We can also draw in people who live in the area. Cedar Falls Park is in an area that is considered a fresh food “food desert”; meaning there is no grocery store within a one mile vicinity of the area.
